Ubehebe Crater

A steam explosion produced this crater several thousand years ago. Rising magma met underground water producing instant steam and a violent explosion.

The crater measures about a half mile across and some 500 feet deep. Oxidizing ores produce the orange tint in the far wall. The grey material is volcanic ash and extends over a six square mile area with the main crater as the center.

Ubehebe Crater

Ubehebe is an Indian word meaning big basket or big bowl.
